Basic Info

The Zebra Loach gets its name not only from its playful behavior, but also from the orange and white stripes that line its body, much like a Tiger Barb, or Zebra fish. Zebra Loaches can reach a size of roughly four inches at maturity.

Health

Zebra Loaches are a hardy species. They require little attention, other than for enjoyment. They should be kept in water with a temperature between 73 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Their water should have a pH in a range of six to eight. They are a little more prone to Ich than most fish, so extra attention should be given to make sure the Zebra Loach doesn't have it. The Zebra Loach is sensitive to chemicals, thusly if they get a disease like Ich care should be given when administering chemicals to the tank. Also, Zebra Loaches have retractable spines under their eyes, so when using a net to catch a Zebra Loach, you should be careful not to get these spines caught on the net. Breeding Zebra Loaches have been bred in captivity, but it is extremely difficult and rare. A lower pH level should be used, around six, and water changes should be implemented to help stimulate breeding. Male and female Zebra Loaches are indistinguishable.

Habitat

Fresh water fish

Behavior

The Zebra Loach is a fun, playful, and interesting fish. With its unique shape, lively behavior, and feeding habits, the Zebra Loach makes an aquarium complete. They are recommended for any community aquarium. Zebra Loaches are a peaceful and friendly fish. Many have reported being able to hand feed their Zebra Loaches. They are very active, swimming constantly, and especially enjoy bubble walls. Zebra Loaches should be kept in groups of five or more, to avoid fighting. Often Zebra Loaches will be found lying on their sides. This does not mean they are dead, they are probably just resting. Zebra Loaches love to dig in gravel, so their substrate should be rocky, not sandy. They should have plenty of hiding places, but they do tend to get stuck in small openings, so be careful. Moderate plant and rock decorations are recommended.
